The image was posted by the real Rick Astley, famous creator of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, and immortalised in meme culture for the ‘rick roll’ meme, to r/pics on 17th June 2020.
The post features a previously unseen image from Astley’s personal archive, of him riding a bike backstage at his first tour in Las Vegas in 1989. The image garnered 439,000 upvotes in four years and went on to become the most upvoted image of all-time on the site.
The image spawned a viral comment interaction, where user u/theMalleableDuck managed to pull off a rick roll on Rick Astley himself, essentially winning the internet, and life, forever.
